PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
TBD (November 2009-November 2010)
General Manager
- Led the conception, development and launch of TBD, a Washington D.C.-based news organization made up of TBD.com and TBD TV, a 24/7 local cable TV news station.
- Managed a 50-person web staff, a 40-person TV staff and an annual budget of approximately $6 million.
- Developed the strategic plan for the August 2010 launch of TBD.com, an innovative local news site combining original journalism with heavy doses of community networking, curation, geo-coding and mobile.
- Led the re-making and re-branding of TBD TV, formerly known as NewsChannel 8. This included recruiting new talent, creating a new set and graphics package and restructuring the newsroom organization.
- TBD.com was named one of 2010’s six hottest journalism startups by Business Insider.
WASHINGTONPOST.NEWSWEEK INTERACTIVE (February 2004-January 2009)
Vice President & Executive Editor, washingtonpost.com
- Supervised the editorial strategy and direction of washingtonpost.com.
- Managed a staff of more than 100, and an annual budget of approximately $18 million.
- Transformed washingtonpost.com into a leader on the Web. The site was the first major U.S. news site to launch blogs, to link to bloggers’ comments about Post journalism, to launch reader comments on articles and to experiment with producing live Webcasts for major news events.
- Led the development of a more aggressive web strategy that resulted in the following major awards for washingtonpost.com: a Scripps National Journalism Award, a Knight Award for Public Service, two Best Overall News Site awards from the Newspaper Association of America, four consecutive Edward R. Murrow awards for Best Non-Broadcast Affiliated Web Site and a Knight-Batten Award for Innovations in Journalism. A full list of awards can be found here.
- Expanded the site’s multimedia capabilities, which helped washingtonpost.com win awards not previously open to print journalism entities. In 2006, the site won the first national Emmy ever awarded for Web video and also won two local Emmys. In 2007, the site won a Peabody Award for its “Being a Black Man” series.
- Dramatically altered the culture of the Web staff, transforming it from a risk-averse, editorially-focused team into one that embraced risk and new Web technologies, and built productive relationships with non-editorial departments such as Sales, Marketing, Business Development, Technology and Legal.
- Was responsible for managing the site’s relationship with the 650-person Washington Post newsroom.
AMERICA ONLINE (March 1999-May 2003)
Vice President, Studio Production & Operations (September 2002-May 2003)
- Managed the group responsible for the scheduling, management, production and launch of all products for AOL’s U.S. and international services, and worked with AOL senior management to prioritize all projects.
- Provided oversight of the group’s two main functions: supporting the daily content programming efforts of the service, and developing core AOL products such as e-mail, instant messaging and client releases.
- Managed a full-time staff of 120 and contractor staff of 30, comprised of the following groups: Engineering, Production, Photo, Operations, Project Management and Product Integrity.
- Managed the group’s $20 million annual budget.
Executive Director, Editorial Operations (September 2001-September 2002)
- Created, developed and managed AOL’s Editorial Operations group, which supervised the daily operations of the company’s 80-person content programming organization.
- Managed a full-time staff of 14, and the group’s $3 million budget.
- Managed operations for the AOL Welcome Screen, then the most-viewed content screen in new media.
- Served as the programming liaison for internal AOL departments and groups, including Sales, Technologies, Marketing, Design, Production, Legal and Corporate Communications.
- Served as the AOL programming liaison for Time Warner partners such as CNN, TNT, Time Inc. and HBO.
- Managed AOL’s service-wide coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Group Programming Director, News & Sports (October 2000-September 2001)
- Managed the AOL News group, which included the News, Sports, International and Government channels.
- Managed a full-time staff of 24, and the group’s $15 million budget.
- The News and Sports channels were consistently ranked No. 1 in reach in their industry categories during this time, according to Media Metrix and Nielsen NetRatings.
- Managed AOL’s relationships with key strategic partners such as CNN, CBS News, The Weather Channel, The New York Times, National Public Radio, CBS SportsLine, the NFL, the NBA and NASCAR.
Director, Sports Channel (March 1999-October 2000)
- Managed the AOL Sports Channel, which included oversight of daily programming decisions and the development of new programming strategies, products and revenue streams.
- Managed a staff of seven, and the group’s $5 million annual budget.
WASHINGTONPOST.NEWSWEEK INTERACTIVE (April 1995-March 1999)
Acting Managing Editor/Assistant Managing Editor (June 1998-March 1999)
- Supervised the daily programming of washingtonpost.com’s home page, news digest and section fronts.
- Participated on senior management team that drove strategy for budgeting, staffing and managing the site’s relationship with The Washington Post newspaper.
- Managed a matrixed full-time editorial staff of 25 and a part-time staff of 15.
- Served as acting managing editor for five months while managing editor worked out visa problems.
Sports Editor (April 1995-June 1998)
- Supervised daily updating and programming of washingtonpost.com’s sports section.
- Managed a full-time editorial staff of four and a part-time staff of 12.
- Was a member of the team that launched washingtonpost.com in June 1996.

- Wrote more than 1,400 articles in seven-plus years with The Post’s sports department.
